Do you have succulents in your home of garden and are wondering how you could have cared for them in a better manner?
Zones
Hardy succulents require the most minimal amount of maintenance. These are perfect if you have a job that requires you to travel for a few days. Most of these plants appear dull and their edges are dry during spring. This does not mean that they are dying. Once they receive enough sunlight, they will change color. Sempervivums or houseleeks change color with different seasonal changes with different species having different bloom seasons.
Planting
If your plant is in a pot, remove it from the pot and plant it in the soil. Make sure that you do not plant it in soil whose level is lower than the level the plant was in the pot. It is advisable to spread some pebbles or gravel around the plant.
Soil
Succulents need soil that will drain water easily. One of the best types of soil to plant your succulents is cactus soil or sand mixed with gravel and some volcanic rock. Whichever type of soil you use, make sure that it does not trap water for too long such that the area around the plant remains soaked. If the plant is in a container, pound some rocks and place them at the bottom.
Watering
It is advisable to water the succulents thoroughly once then let the water dry up nicely. Succulents do not thrive in wet situations. Make sure there are adequate breaks between the watering periods to allow the soil to dry.
Fertilizer
Succulents do not need too much fertilizer to thrive. You can fertilize the soil every once a month. Consult an expert on the best type of fertilizer for your succulents.
Flowering
According to The Ultimate Succulent Guidebook different species of succulents have different blooming seasons. For instance, sempervivums bloom after two or three years. The flower stalk grows from the center with a cluster of flowers. You can remove the flowers by twisting the main stalk. Flowers will bud every few weeks until blooming season is over.
Benefits Of Succulents
You can have succulents in your compound to add color to your property. Their different shapes and textures also make them great as decorative flowers. Since they have different blooming seasons, your garden will always have color.
